IN TIME

Ephemeral Short Film

In time is a short film inspired by the idea of living in parallel and the possibility of tomorrow. It was filmed and acted by my friend Victor Le and I. It features a silent and interpretive storyline, parallel cut scenes and some of Montreal’s key sceneries. The final product was edited via Adobe After Effects, where additional texts, soundtracks and visual effects were added.

The impression of the film is meant to be interpretive and wonderous, including the open-ended ending.

The hope is to evoke an emotive and intuitive response within the viewers.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The concept of time was explored within this short film. I was interested in creating a piece of work that depicts the abstraction of transcending through space and time. More specifically, the idea of one individual's actions being similar on in contrasts to another at the exact time frame. I was also fascinated by the concept of alternative dimensions in the universe and having multiple copies of the same individual doing different things in these different worlds at the exact same time.

With our inspiration being the parallelism of time, the potential of different universes existing within time and the possibility of being at different places in time depending on one's path, I wanted to use mirrors and reflections to represent them. This concept dictated the editing style I went for.

Existing works such as "Your Name/Kimi no Nawa" by Makoto Shinkai and "I" by Taeyeon have inspired this short. Each of these possess a duality of personal and represent them together on the same plane and within the same scene.

PROCESS

The work explores different split screens movie techniques and how each screen relates to each other in order to create the parallel persona effect that we were inspired from. By starting with a calm background music to a transition of an uplifting song, I wanted viewers to watch the short film in a serene ambience but with a gentle sense of curiosity and uncertainty. we decided to shoot parts of the body to keep the focus on the parallel actions without revealing the characters.  Finally, we’ve created a sort of cliffhanger at the end of the video because we wanted the interpretation of the ending to be up to the viewers themselves. If we revealed the whole concept, we felt that it wouldn’t have the same reactions that the viewers would have.
